1.3 Measurement of Mass
Mass is one of the base quantities in the SI system of units, measured in kilograms and denoted by kg.
The amount of matter contained in an object is called mass.
- It is the amount of matter in an object.
- It is the amount of atoms/molecules in an object.
- Mass is one of the base quantities in S.I. system of units.
- It is measured in kilograms and denoted by kg.
The beam balance or top-pan balance is used to measure the mass of a body.
There are various multiples and submultiples are given in the following table.
From an electron to the moon, planets, stars, galaxy and even the universe have its mass.
The average mass of an electron = 9.1093837015×10−31 kg
The average mass of proton = 1.67262 × 10−27 kg
The average mass of an atom of carbon = 1.9944235 × 10-26 kg
From an electron to the moon, planets, stars, galaxy and even the universe have its mass.
The approximate mass of an adult is 70kg.
The mass of an elephant is approximately 5 tonnes (5,000kg).
The average mass of our sun is 1.989 × 1030 kg about 333,000 times bigger than the mass of our earth.
